a powerful and mesmerizing film that must be seen, 15 December 2004

I had the pleasure of seeing this film at the Bahamas Film Festival and was truly amazed by this film. It is an autobiographical retelling of Enrique Pineyro's (Director/Writer/Lead Actor) real-life experience as a whistle blower against the corrupt corporate and government practices regarding airline safety and regulation in Argentina. It is a brave and extraordinarily powerful story. Pineyro beautifully depicts his love for flying. As a pilot, Pineyro faced unbelievable pressure to perform under duress with poorly functioning planes and an administration more concerned with the bottom line, then the safety of its human cargo. Both lyrical and troubling the film weaves in and out of Pineyro's experience which culminates in the sad aftermath of the famous LAPA plane crash of '99 in Buenos Aires, which Pineyro himself predicted, resulting in the deaths of 37 people. Pineyro's story is fascinating. The cinematography and score is simply captivating, and the performances by all are top notch. His ability as a director and an actor is incredible. I beseech you all to see this film. Bravo Enrique.

First, sorry for my poor English, as it is not my native language. The movie is a rare gem in Argentine filmography. Thrillers, action and movies that are mainly on complex machines are not typically filmed or produced by Latin American countries, even when the subject of the movie may have taken place in these latitudes (Alive! was filmed by Canadians in Canada on an epic true story that took place in the Argentinian-Chilean Andes). So, this is a denounce of the epidemic corruption in the Argentina of the 90', told by the man that plays as himself and revives for us some of the same ordeals he lived in real life when he was an airline captain. THIS is the unique thing about this movie. It is very well done, and as pilot, I can tell that the technical side is perfect. No cheap or even expensive mock ups. All is real. The simulator sessions are simulator sessions, and the airborne scenes are filmed during real flying in the cockpit (except a passenger cabin short scene, that I read was filmed in a crew training mock up). Excellent photography that immerse the spectator in places that earth bound mortals do not usually visit. No wonder why this movie won so many prizes: apart from the political and critical intentions, it is a good example that excellent products of this kind can be made without zillions.

To play this file if the codec isn't installed:
most people have the H264 (x264 is a specific encoder hereof) or otherwise called
MPEG4 part 10 or AVC (Advanced Video Coding) codec installed.
The codec gives ~20% better quality with same filesize then DivX or Xvid.
Anyway it's the codec of the future, try mediacoder 6.1 it uses Mencoder to encode movies
made with your (digital) camera, it works great!
and can encode in any dimention or aspect ratio! mediacoder 6.1 is free and uses x264 encoder.
Defaults are great, I use Constant quality encoding to get the smallest file with constant quality.

ordered in preference.... smplayer is great as it allows increased and decreased playback speed in 10% steps!
(WITHOUT pitch difference, effective to watch a movie at 120% speed and save some 20% of your time!)
Both VLC player and smplayer are 'safe' as they don't install codecs and you can deinstall the player, but also ffdshow can be de-installed without problems (as far as i know).

As it kept bugging me that with WinDVD i could watch a movie with (5% steps) increased speed. and so get over boring parts faster without missing anything (even pitch doesn't change!) i searched and finally found this open source free player
works as a charm, playback of almost all formats without installing extra codecs, low on CPU usage,
use keys [ and ] for 10% speed increase / decrease and backspace to reset to 1x speed.
great, no drawbacks, easy and intuitively configurable preferences.

directshow filter with many options. works with any media player inc. windows media player.
i tested it, will play the files with media player classic or windows media player.
it is great, you can tweak so many things like deinterlacing, viewing number size and type (I/P/B) of every frame with OSD, denoising, aspect ratio, changing saturation etc etc, but as you tweak it remembers so ocassionally you get in trouble and need to reset things (But sam same with windows essentials media codec pack described above)
settings are fine the way they are preset, except you need to choose *(don't restrict) twice so all programs can use it.
it uses profiles you you could make different profile settings, but if other users use your computer they'll get confused and it's better not to play with the options.
3: VLC player standalone player does not install codecs. about 9Mb

standalone player
will play the files perfectly, does not install any codecs, has the codecs 'built in' the player.
does have one slight annoyance: by default it makes a playlist, and so if you click another movie while the player is still open it won't start to play it, but adds it to the playlist and... does nothing.
this you can change somewhere in the menu:
settings - preferences (you can click the plusses for many more options!)
-advanced - untick enque items to playlist when in one instance mode.
4: - Windows Essentials Media Codec Pack 1, about 8Mb

tested it, works, but essentially the same as installing ffdshow witch will work to decode H264
and many others by itself + some extra's and an automated codec update service and comes with Media player classic.
it's an 8Mb download. i recomend just installing ffdshow...
